After almost 2 years living here in Davao, it’s been a while since I visit and talked about my hometown, the Misamis Occidental. Misamis Occidental also hold a mesmerizing beauty that can captured everyone’s heart; from nature, beaches, culture, to ancestral houses. I came in this province and Misamis Occidental is really an amazing community where people are hospitable and kind.
Deciding to visit this province opens up a lot of choices, from the allure of recreational parks and pristine beaches to the enchantment of captivating waterfalls. The different uniqueness of tourist spots offers something for every traveler seeking natural beauty and adventure.
When exploring Misamis Occidental, you can hear the term 'HERITAGE TOWN' , particularly in the captivating land of Jimenez, renowned as 'The Old Mystical Heritage Town.' In this municipality, one can be amazed at the preservation of a hundred ancestral houses, a testament to their resilience and cultural significance after the era of Spanish colonization. For those who are interested in history, Jimenez stands as the perfect destination, providing a wealth of stories and insights into the rich historical tapestry of Misamis Occidental, making it an ideal haven for the history enthusiast.
One of the famous ancestral house here in Jimenez is the Nacion Ancestral house “Barraco House” that built in 1914. They said that this house was use as printing press during Japanese occupation where emergency money was printed. There still a lot of tools inside like the old telephone, piano, and even the emergency bills.
Their most protected cultural treasure is the San Juan Bautista Church the oldest church in town. This was built in late 18’s and declared as one of the country’s Natural cultural treasure.
Through the help of modern technology, I reached out to Auntie Mary, a resident of Jimenez for nearly 30 years. She shared insights about the town, emphasizing the arrival of tourists attracted to Jimenez due to its well-maintained heritage houses. According to her, the San Juan Bautista Church stands out as the most visited, cherished by locals who ensure its preservation. Despite its age, the church retains its allure with European-style architecture and a rich collection of artifacts, showcasing a timeless beauty.
Auntie Mary also said that they have strong community bond in Jimenez, where residents actively protect their cultural treasures. This effort contributes to maintaining the freshness, beauty, anda captivation of the town's historical landmarks. Furthermore, she mentioned the warm hospitality of Jimenians, making visitors feel not just like guest, but welcomed members of their community, adding to the overall charm of the place.
I also ask Aunt Mary's daughter, Allen, to get more information and I learned about the deep connection between the residents and the San Juan Bautista Church in Jimenez. Allen became a Lecture server for 4 years and altar server for 3 years in the church.
Allen shared that her journey began at the age of 6 when her 'nanay' brought her to attend a Sunday mass. After several years, her interest grew, and she eventually became an active member and altar server. Allen added that the church's commit to preserved traditions, continuing ancient practices, and upholding old policies. Specifically, she mentioned positive changes, such as the church now allowing girls who have the position of altar sever to serve in the altar, a shift from previous practices.
Allen said that to maintain the traditions, the church actively encourages and pursue teenagers to participate and have a proper sense of responsibility by promoting dress codes within the sacred space. She added that she had a great journey and get valuable lessons she has learned through her experiences, supporting the church's role not only as a religious center but also as a place for personal growth and community engagement. This blend of tradition and adaptation contributes to the church's enduring significance in the lives of Jimenians.
She love this church as well as her family. This is her safe place, whenever she was not at peace or been stress out from her studies and work, she will go to the church praying and asking guidance to our Almighty Father. And she said the church serves as refuge not just for her, but for others in her church community as well.
